Rotary Goes Green - more infoAn Introduction to the 'Green Rotary' initiative

By Dorcas Otieno, Rotary Country Environment Chair-Kenya

Economic development and human survival solely depend on natural resources for the provision of raw materials and a suitable habitat for existence. However, there has been very little consideration of impacts of related activities on the environment. Rotary International has long been involved in projects aimed at preserving planet Earth, such as building parks and starting community recycling programs. Current global issues such as climate change and endangered livelihoods are of grave concern to all.

The Rotary year 2008-09 has seen the birth of a revitalized “green movement” within Rotary, and particularly within D9200. The Rotary family in Kenya has developed an Environment Strategy whose vision is Rotary clubs that ensure a healthy and wealthy environment for all, and mission is to promote and enhance the quality of the environment through demonstration and facilitation of practices towards sustainable livelihoods. The goal of this strategy is to improve environmental conditions for schools and communities by the end of June 2009.
